Events that Create Approachable Opportunities: Single Ready and Waiting - Dinner, Movie & Pool Night

On January 22, 2011, Single Ready and Waiting organized an event that created an awesome atmosphere for individuals to approach one another.  Plus, Approach2link was there to share tips on how to approach one another.

The mixing and mingling began right at 5:30 as the attendees filed into a room where two tables awaited them: a refreshment table and a pool table.  If you have been following approach2link posts, then you know how we feel about refreshment tables.  It's only one of the best places to meet someone.  I noticed that many took advantage of that approachable opportunity that night and initiated conversation around the refreshment table.  The pool table offered additional opportunities for people to mingle as well as many took that opportunity to invite others to play with them.  As we played we had the opportunity to chat and throw friendly jabs to add fun or fuel to the "competitive" game.  The men also took the opportunity to teach the females how to play and provided tips on shooting the best shot.  Based on my observations that night, I highly recommend a game of pool at any singles event as a great way to get the opposite genders to mingle.

Apart from the mingling, we were invited to watch a movie entitled "Soul Mate." According to www.soulmatefilm.com, it is a gripping cinematic journey into the realities facing today's successful, saved, and single African American Women.  The trials, and triumphs of unforgettable women are revealed as they offer hope and practical advice on such issues as loneliness and the uncertainty of the future.  Check out the trailer below...

This movie stirred up emotions and brought out a lively discussion between the ladies and men on the views of singleness and the role it plays in modern society.  The following is what stuck out for Tanika Chambers, founder of Single, Ready and Waiting...

"In the movie a lady said "she thought he was the one" and for the first time in her life she didn't pray to ask God about him. She married him and soon found out that he was not what he said he was.

Lesson Learned: Even when he/she looks like the one don't forget to still PRAY, PRAY, PRAY. God will give you the wisdom and discernment you need to really know who this person really is, even when your natural eye's can't see it."

I totally agree with Tanika.  For me, there were a few things that I noticed about those who participated in this documentary.  First, I noticed that some, maybe all of them, had an internal issue they had to get over, whether it be there sexuality or dating someone for 6 years and it not working out.   These are all factors that come into play when one considers their availability to meet someone.  This means that individuals need to become available to receive love by dealing with their issues and getting over them.  In addition to being available, another thing I took note was the appearance that one is content with not getting married.  This is often assumed when one acts or is perceived as independent.  This makes me think about how being independent may have a part to play in singleness as well due to the fact that being independent means that you are autonomous and do not any one to depend on.  This means that independent individuals need to accept help and be dependent so to not look so independent that you don't need anyone.

As mentioned before, in a previous blog, organized discussions are great ways to meet people.  It allows for everyone to participate in the conversation and get to learn new things about people and their view points.  I would definitely recommend another Single Ready and Waiting - Dinner, Movie and Pool Night because you get to mingle, you get to participate in a discussion and you get to EAT lol.
