Conversation Starter: Kentucky Ban on Interracial Marriage

Kentucky Church Bans Interracial Marriage A Kentucky church went on record saying that while all people were welcome to attend public worship services there, the church did not condone interracial marriage.  In addition, parties of such marriages will not be received as members, nor will they be used in worship services or other church functions, with the exception of funerals.  They claimed that the reason behind this decision is intended to promote greater unity among the church body and the community we serve and to judge the salvation of anyone. The small congregation, held this vote after longtime member who is white, brought her fiancé who is black to church with her in June. The couple was banned after performing a song together at the church. Thankfully, this proposition was recently voided - Pastor voids the vote on Interracial Marriage

Just last night I was apart of an organized group discussion that discussed Interracial Dating (if you have never joined a group discussion as a means to get to know people you should check this link for reasons why).  The group consisted of 5 ladies and 5 Men who were all black.  It's unfortunate but a true reality that such a discussion is still relevant today.  However, as you can see by the recent article post from Kentucky, interracial marriages are still not accepted by everyone.  As we discussed the question of whether or not one would date/marry outside their race the majority said yes they would and that the culture/environment of which they were reared is more important than the skin colour but the discussion drew many other issues that were deeper than the topic at hand.  Some of those issues were indirectly related to interracial dating but related with race relations none the less such as racial profiling, mental slavery and disproportionate representation in employment and media.  We all agreed that we are all humans and thus there shouldn't be an issues with marrying interracially; however, there a lot of things to consider when contemplating the worth of the marriage.  Is it worth having to deal the negative views of others who still don't except interracial relationships? Is it worth dealing with family members who will never like your mate because of their skin colour? Is it worth the challenges you will face with raising a bi-racial child? If the answer is yes, then don't hesitate to get married; however, one needs to learn how to deal with these challenges (since they unfortunately still exist) in order to be successful.

From our discussion and this recent news report it's clear that racism up until this present time continues to occur but thankfully we have made enormous improvements over centuries.  In a continued efforts to make improvements lets continue to "emancipate ourselves from mental slavery" (Marley, B) and continue to proportionate the representation of all races in every area of work and in media to reflect the population.  By doing so we will continue to grow to accept race relations and interracial dating/marriages will no longer be an issue.
