Facing The Dreaded Question: “Tell me about yourself” - Part II

Stand like the Brave

“Tell me about yourself” - Tends to be a tricky question on an interview because the information you reveal about yourself can lead the interviewer to keep considering you as a candidate, or it can cause them to cross you off the list. Is it possible that when asked this question on a date the way you answer will determine if you will be getting a second date?

A career advisor would advise the interviewee to not be afraid of this question and instead use it as an opportunity to position one’s self for success. This same mantra can be applied to the dater. Like on an interview, this question offers an opportunity to describe yourself positively and focus the interview/date on your strengths. So to handle this question when it arises, the dater, like the interviewee, needs to be prepared to deal with it.

Your goal when you answer the question in an interview is to find a way stand out from everyone else that applies for the job. Could the dater answer this question on a date with this same mind frame? Should you answer the question in a way that will make you stand out from other daters?

A well-prepared candidate should welcome this inquiry, rather than dread this question (in both cases - on an interview or on a date). Properly answered, this question puts the candidate in the driver's seat. It gives one an opportunity to sell themselves. It allows one to set the tone and direction for the rest of the interview/date, setting oneself up to answer the questions one most wants to answer.
